On Sunday, Google honoured the iconic Bollywood actress Sridevi with a specially designed doodle, commemorating her 60th birth anniversary on 13 August.
Born in 1963 in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Sridevi was a prodigy, embarking on her cinematic journey at age four with the Tamil film “Kandhan Karunai”.
This passion grew exponentially, culminating in an illustrious career spanning over four decades with an impressive portfolio of nearly 300 movies.
Crafted by the talented Mumbai-based artist Bhumika Mukherjee, the doodle captures the essence of Sridevi’s unparalleled charisma.
It celebrates her unique ability to command lead roles in a predominantly male-centric Bollywood without the conventional need for a male counterpart.
Beyond her foundational Tamil film roots, Sridevi’s linguistic prowess in multiple South Indian languages paved her way into Telugu and Malayalam film industries.
Her widespread recognition soared in 1976, with a standout performance in “Moondru Mudichu”.
This gateway introduced her magnetic presence to the Hindi film industry. Following this, her stints in films like “Himmatwala”, “Sadma”, “Chaalbaaz”, “Lamhe”, and “Chandani” solidified her position as Bollywood’s reigning queen.
After a sabbatical, her comeback film “English Vinglish” in 2012 demonstrated her unmatched acting acumen, garnering critical acclaim and box office success.
Recognized as Indian cinema’s pioneering female superstar, her contributions were officially acknowledged with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.
Even in her final movie, “Mom” (2017), Sridevi advocated for strong female protagonists. However, in a twist of fate, the world lost this cinematic gem in 2018 when she passed away in Dubai at 54.
