Gadar 2 Sets New Records at the Box Office
Sunny Deol’s latest period action film, “Gadar 2,” is making waves at the box office, with its collection poised to cross the Rs 300 crore mark before its second weekend. The film, a sequel to the 2001 hit “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha,” has performed exceptionally well since its release.
On Independence Day alone, it raked in Rs 55 crore, marking the highest collection for any film on this day in the history of Indian cinema. As of day five, the film’s total collection stands at an impressive Rs 229 crore in India.
The film’s success is evident from its 88% occupancy rate across the Hindi-speaking regions. While “Gadar 2” has been a favorite among North Indian audiences, Rajinikanth’s “Jailer” has dominated the South. Anil Sharma, the director of both “Gadar” films, faced competition from “OMG 2” on Friday.
Reports from Box Office India suggest that “Gadar 2” could have seen even higher numbers had it been the only major release. The film encountered capacity issues on Independence Day, with many single-screen theatres needing help to meet the overwhelming demand. Despite adding extra shows, “Gadar 2” continues to exceed box office expectations.
Breaking down the film’s daily collections: it earned Rs 40 crore on its opening day, followed by Rs 43 crore on the second day, Rs 51 crore on the third, Rs 38 crore on the fourth, and Rs 55 crore on the fifth day. The film is now set to surpass the “The Kerala Story collections.” Its next target is the all-time Hindi box office record held by Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan,” which collected Rs 543 crore in India and over Rs 1000 crore globally.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has sparked discussions on whether “Gadar 2” will outdo “Pathaan” regarding nett collections.
The original “Gadar,” also helmed by Anil Sharma, was a massive hit in 2001, even when it was up against the critically acclaimed “Lagaan.” It ended its theatrical run with a global collection of Rs 130 crore, a record that its sequel shattered within days. “Gadar 2” boasts a star-studded cast with Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma reprising their roles, and its plot revolves around the 1971 India-Pakistan War. On the other hand, “OMG 2” is also making its mark at the box office, having already crossed the Rs 50 crore milestone.
