Director Karan Johar’s latest Bollywood offering, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” a romantic drama starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, is making a strong impression at the Indian box office. Released on July 28, 2023, the film has managed to amass approximately Rs 67.12 crore in just six days, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film was released by Dharma Productions.
The film, which initially garnered Rs 11.1 crore on its opening day, saw a significant boost by the end of its opening weekend, earning Rs 45.90 crore. This figure was only Rs 3 crore less than the opening weekend earnings of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” a historical drama that had released a week prior.
In a year where few Hindi films have achieved hit status, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” is emerging as a potential contender. Other notable successes this year include “Pathaan,” a thriller which raked in a staggering Rs 543.05 crore, and “The Kerala Story,” a biographical film which earned Rs 242.20 crore.
Despite facing stiff competition from Hollywood releases such as “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” an animated film, and “Mission Impossible 7,” an action thriller, Johar’s film has managed to hold its own, thanks to positive reviews from critics like Taran Adarsh and audience reactions on platforms like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s performance is expected to remain strong during its second weekend.
“Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” also features veteran actors Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi in pivotal roles. The film marks Karan Johar’s return after a 7-year gap, his last directorial venture being 2016’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.” The family drama has been well-received by both critics and audiences.
When compared to other Bollywood films of the same genre, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” stands out for its unique storytelling and stellar performances, making it a must-watch for Bollywood enthusiasts.
